Our picks in Leh

Not a generic top-10 — these are the ones worth your time.

Pangong Tso — The Blue Lake at 4,350m

The lake from 3 Idiots. 5-6 hours from Leh via Chang La pass (5,360m). The lake changes colour from blue to turquoise to green through the day. Stay overnight at lakeside camps (INR 2,000-5,000/night with meals). Return via the same route or loop through Hanle (permits needed). Inner Line Permit required — arrange through your hotel or a Leh travel agent (INR 200-400).

Nubra Valley & Diskit Monastery

Cross Khardung La (5,359m, one of the highest motorable passes) to reach Nubra Valley (4-5 hours). Diskit Monastery has a 32m Maitreya Buddha statue. Ride a double-humped Bactrian camel at Hunder sand dunes (INR 200-300). Stay in Hunder or Sumur (INR 1,500-4,000/night). Inner Line Permit required.

Leh Old Town & Monasteries

Walk through Leh Old Town to the 17th-century Leh Palace (INR 100 entry, sunrise views). Visit Shanti Stupa for panoramic valley views (free, best at sunset). Day-trip to Thiksey Monastery (17 km, looks like a mini Potala Palace) and Hemis Monastery (45 km, Ladakh's richest). Hemis Festival in June-July is spectacular.

Magnetic Hill & Zanskar Confluence

Magnetic Hill (30 km from Leh) — an optical illusion where cars appear to roll uphill. Nearby Gurudwara Pathar Sahib is worth a stop. Continue to the Zanskar-Indus river confluence where turquoise meets brown. Best viewed from the road above. Half-day trip, combine with Alchi Monastery (70 km) for a full day.

Quick answers about Leh

How much does a flight to Leh cost from Delhi?

One-way flights from Delhi to Leh cost INR 4,000-12,000. IndiGo, Vistara, GoFirst, and Air India operate direct flights (1 hour 20 minutes). Prices spike in June-August. Book 4-6 weeks ahead for summer. Winter flights (Dec-Feb) are cheaper but frequently cancelled due to weather.

How do I deal with altitude sickness in Leh?

Leh is at 3,500m. Rest completely on day 1 — no physical activity, no hot showers. Drink 3-4 litres of water daily. Carry Diamox (consult your doctor before the trip). Symptoms: headache, nausea, breathlessness. Most people acclimatise in 24-48 hours. Do not go higher (Khardung La, Pangong) on day 1 or 2.

How many days are enough for Leh Ladakh?

5-7 days is ideal. Day 1: arrive and acclimatise. Day 2: Leh town, palace, Shanti Stupa. Day 3-4: Nubra Valley via Khardung La (overnight). Day 5-6: Pangong Lake (overnight). Day 7: buffer/departure. For Tso Moriri, Hanle, or Zanskar, add 2-3 more days.

Do I need permits for Ladakh?

Indian nationals need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Pangong, Nubra, Tso Moriri, and Hanle. Apply online at lahdclehpermit.in or through hotels/agents in Leh (INR 200-400, same day). Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit (PAP) — apply through a registered tour operator. Carry multiple photocopies of your permit.

Is Leh accessible in winter?

By air only. Both the Manali-Leh and Srinagar-Leh highways close from October to mid-June due to snow. Winter flights operate but cancellations are common. The Chadar Trek (frozen Zanskar River walk) happens in January-February for experienced trekkers. Most hotels and restaurants close November-April — confirm availability before booking.
