Nairobi at a glance

When to visit

June to October is peak safari season (dry, 15-25 C). The Great Migration in Masai Mara happens July-October. January-February is also dry and good. March-May (long rains) and November (short rains) are cheapest but some roads become impassable. Nairobi's climate is pleasant year-round due to altitude (1,660m).

Getting there

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) is 15 km from the city centre. A taxi to Westlands/CBD takes 30-45 minutes (KES 2,000-3,000, INR 1,200-1,800). Uber works well in Nairobi. Wilson Airport (WIL) handles domestic flights and safari charters to Masai Mara.

Quick answers about Nairobi

How much does a flight to Nairobi cost from India?

One-way flights from Mumbai/Delhi to Nairobi cost INR 12,000-28,000. Via Dubai or Doha is cheapest (Ethiopian, Kenya Airways, Emirates). Flight time is 6-7 hours direct, 9-12 hours via connections. Kenya Airways flies direct from Mumbai (5.5 hours).

Do Indian citizens need a visa for Kenya?

Yes. Apply for an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) at etakenya.go.ke. Costs USD 30 (INR 2,500). Processing takes 2-3 business days. You need a valid passport, yellow fever vaccination certificate, and confirmed accommodation. Single entry, valid for 90 days.

How many days are enough for Kenya?

5-7 days is ideal. 1-2 days Nairobi (National Park, elephant orphanage, Giraffe Centre). 3-4 days Masai Mara safari. Add 2-3 days for Diani Beach (coast) or Amboseli National Park (Kilimanjaro views). 3 days works for Nairobi + a short Mara trip.

Is Nairobi safe for Indian tourists?

Use common sense. Nairobi has petty crime — avoid walking alone at night, especially in the CBD. Use Uber, not random taxis. Westlands, Karen, and Lavington are safer neighborhoods. Safaris and tourist areas are well-managed. The Indian community in Nairobi is large and established.

When is the cheapest time to visit Kenya?

April-May (long rains) has the cheapest flights and 30-50% lower safari rates. Some lodges close but budget camps stay open. November (short rains) is also affordable. July-October is peak and most expensive, especially migration season camps in Masai Mara.
